Case Study: Architectural Models that WOW!

6/12/2021

Architectural models are time-consuming and expensive to build, but augmented reality can help revitalise basic models and transform them into an immersive experience that can be continually updated as your design progresses.
Recently we augmented a physical site-model of a railway station, to create an immersive presentation for visitors who experience the project. The site model was developed to show a basic railway platform with 3d printed people and train. By keeping the site model simple, we were able to use ARki to augment the model with several design options that explained the project in detail.

To create the project we used several of the features available on ARki to make a unique presentation that engages visitors with the footbridge 3d models. Check out how we used each feature in the app to make this project come to life!

Explode

We launched Explode in ARki 8.0 - which allows users to make simple exploded animations, to highlight design components easily. In this project we used Explode to highlight the construction sequence of a standard footbridge, showing how the stairs, and bridge are positioned onsite in pre-built components!

Annotate

Another ARki 8 feature, Annotate helps you create simple tags that give users basic information. Tags are responsive, so they follow the camera position, and make sure users can read each note from any perspective. For the footbridge project we used tags as a quick way to inform users of the footbridge names.

World Anchor

Once you have your project created in AR, you will need to pin it down in position, so users can see it exactly as you want. ARki lets you anchor projects using either an Image or a world object. In this project we used the World Anchor tool to save the 3d models on top of the physical railway model. The advantage of using a world anchor is that you can save on top of any complex object, and you don’t need to predetermine an image before hand. Remember to use world objects that have enough distinct features for the best performance.
