In the search for greater augmented realities, what we forget is the downfalls of this technology, and how it impacts our psyche from a psychological level. To immerse whole heartedly within our digital experiences without an understanding of how it is impacting us socially, and environmentally, is essentially negligence on our part. We must bring into attention the downfalls of AR, as much as praise its technologically capacity.
Such inventions do as much for human development, as they harm to our social capacities. What is highly significant within our experience of technology is how we learn to engage with others/environments through connected, empathetic relationship, versus that of mere façade. The use of augmented landscapes can bring into play a key disadvantage of glorifying the mundane, the ordinary and the common place. The enjoyment of greater stimulating landscapes, adorned by AR has the enticing capacity to draw in much more engagement, yet if we overdo the use of such environments, we run the risk of dulling down our most ordinary experiences of space, and our daily engagements within our environment.
The dilemma of Augmented Landscapes is a paradox, one of both highs and lows. What we create in this utopian vision of augmented realities, is that we become adorned with entertainment, pleasure and seamless connection. Yet the mere understanding of such emotional capacities requires a total dissolution to the need for external stimuli as grand as those defined by the information era. In this hunt for greater stimulation and pleasure, what we risk is loosing that which we should appreciate the most, the things and experiences which advocate total stillness and calm.
So how then do we justify the progression of augmented reality as a functional paradigm for humanity? The answer lies in our ability to challenge the need for technology as mere distraction. What we require is the awareness that technology alone does not hold the answers to human progression, it is a tool, that can be used to guide and assist in our survival within this physical experience. Augmenting realities is thus a mere enabler, that should allow for greater connectivity between us and our environments, helping to augment what we appreciate the most about reality, and nullify that which serves to distract.
