Some useful tips on how to prepare and export models.

Tutorial 01: Finding Polygon Counts and File Size

  • Polygon Limit: 600,000 polygons per model
  • Maximum Number of Individual Objects: 900
  • File Size: below 40mb in .fbx format
  • For File Sizes above the Limit please contact us for Optimisation services.

The most crucial factor for demonstrating architectural models in augmented reality is the size of the models being rendered at real-time. Most models submitted to us are very information heavy because these models are normally created at 1:1 scale, or modelled without considering Polygon Counts. Due to the size and complexity of detail within these models, they often take too much processing power for most portable devices to render and augment at real-time. Therefore in order to achieve the most robust AR performance, models must be optimised through their polygon count.

The optimum model size for best AR tracking is:
  • Below 600,000 polygons,
  • Less Than 900 individual objects in the scene.
  • Under 40mb in File Size (.fbx format)
This means that ideally each model being viewed at one time in AR must comply with the file size limit, so that the program can track with the best frame rate and performance. This number may appear as an incredible feat for most architectural models, however up until now we have managed to optimise models as complex as 9 million polygons to our desired file size limit, without loosing the important features and details of the overall design.

To check the polygon count for 3dmodel please refer to the guidelines below:
Polygon Count in 3dsMax
Polygon Count in Sketchup
Polygon Count in Maya

For models created in Revit, Microstation and Autocad, please export these first as .FBX and check polygon count and file size, and object count in the software's mentioned above.
